Anchor: Something used to hold another thing securely; to be held securely.

I’m very visual, and I have vivid dreams. In recent months, when I was praying, I saw an image of anchor and nearby bobbing lights, as if on a buoy on water. Later that day I saw a graphic with scripture about how God is our anchor in stormy waters.

When I see a word repeatedly, I know God is trying to tell me something. Hebrews 6:19 says,

“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil….”

This means that the hope I have in Jesus Christ, not only for eternity but also for the here and now, functions like an anchor, holding my soul in a secure place. It’s such a deep and real hope that it goes even within the veil of the essence of who I am.

About a year ago, something unexpected happened. This situation was similar to other unexpected challenges my husband and I had faced as parents, but this time I refused to give in to despair, even for one second. I distinctly remember feeling like I had reached the ground floor of my fear. Call it the firm foundation of Christ, or reaching the end of a tether, this anchor gave me hope and peace that is not my natural reaction.

Pausing to remember the promises in God’s Word, like this one in Hebrews 6:19, Christ did what He always does when I take Him at His Word: He provided me peace. He became the very words I read; He became the anchor of my soul.

POSTSCRIPT JULY 2, 2019: Hey guess what? I saw this plaque at a friend’s house this past weekend. And yesterday, in conversation a friend mentioned something about God being the anchor for my soul. Feel free to comment or message me if you have some experiences like this you would like to share.
